Civil PartnershipAs from 5th December 2005 the Civil Partnership Act 2004 enables same sex couples to register a partnership which is similar to marriage and gain certain rights in relation to one another, as married couples do. Civil partners will be recognised as each other’s "next of kin". The partnership, like marriage, will end on either death, dissolution or annulment. The status of civil partners will be permanent and couples who have entered a partnership will be known as former civil partners if the partnership breaks up or a surviving civil partner if one of the partner dies. A Civil Partnership gives public recognition to the relationship enabling same sex couples to gain rights that were traditionally reserved for heterosexual married couples.
